Horse Cribbing Methods That Work
People who love and own horses have varied methods of dealing with a horse that cribs. I will just give you a few tried and true methods that I have personally used and that have been very successful.
What exactly is cribbing? Cribbing is when a horse swallows air, often referred to as wind sucking or swallowing air. Some horses crib by grasping an object, such as a fence post or board with their upper teeth, then arching their necks and pulling usually making a gasping sound or grunting noise. Cribbing or wind sucking is a vice, and it can be a very hard habit to break.
There are consolidate student debt reasons why horses crib, boredom, stress and a lack of exercise are the most common reasons to date. Horses that are stalled for any length of time are more likely to pick up this habit than pasture raised horses.
First I would try letting your horse pasture as much as possible, with as much acreage as you can. If you have just one horse you may want to think about getting another horse for a companion or goats often make great companions and are less expensive.
The second method is an anti-cribbing collar or strap. You can find these at your local feed store or where you buy gear for your horses. The collar is a leather strap that fits around your horse's neck with a Y shaped metal plate, which covers the bottom of the neck. The anti-cribbing collar constrains the neck muscles each time your horse attempts to crib. I have used this method and it actually deters the cribbing behavior in most horses.
Another method is a 'comforter'! What is a comforter? It is a substance such as rubber (usually the best) that actually covers the area in which the horse is likely to crib. Why rubber? Rubber is preferred for the longevity of use and it will not damage the horse's teeth. This is a very good method for lessoning the negative effects of cribbers but is not as forthcoming as far as correcting the behavior.
Then there is supplements that work very well and come in many different shapes and sizes. I have personally tried a couple of these and some do work but again you must continue usage on a daily basis or the cribbing will continue as well.
As a last alternative, surgery can be performed but, before you consider this alternative, talk to your veterinarian for specific information about cribbing and your horses' health.
Horses vary as individuals and ,therefore, the above treatments work on some and may not on others. These methods are not a cure-all and will not correct cribbing until you find the underlying cause of the problem.
