Specializing in Collectibles - Affairs of the Heart

Was it that infamous shot to clinch the game? The last moment you spent with your old man, watching him as he soaked in another win from a team that was as much a part of your family as your lovable mutt? Maybe the first game you experienced with your boy, when you 2001 A Space Odyssey "oh yeah, we got something special here".

Little trinkets, that mark an occasion or celebration. A Mister Met plush toy that takes you back to 1970 Shea Stadium, or a program you filled out at your first ball game, you didn't even know what E-5 meant or how to spell Ed Kranepool. Nostalgia is not really for the weak of heart. Something happens to your body when you are 43 years old SpiderMan think about the 1970's and it feels like it was yesterday. What is that something else that runs through your body, that you know is not blood or lipids?

Tell me I am not the only Sandman comic that this happens to. Tell me that sports cards and memorabilia is as much a part of your childhood and past as it is mine. Sports cards are not for profit anymore today then they were in the 1970's, when do I dare write it? You were that one kid on the block who did not know who Mickey Mantle was and yes, you did dare put him between your spokes on you bike, when the rest of us would only dare put NY Mets infielder Ken Boswell, besides we knew better, we got a Boswell in every pack, odds were everything even before profit.

Yes, you probably got an extra egging come Halloween, especially by a disgruntled Yankees fan for that bold/dumb but hey you deserved it. I sell and purchase sports cards and watch their values just about everyday of my life, but there is no feeling quite like holding a sports card from the 1970's and letting that card take you to your very own block in Brooklyn, 13th Street - Park Slope for me.
Jimmy, Pauly, and Tommy and I are still 10 years old and if I really concentrate I can still hear a subway train rolling by Avenue U and even further behind in my mind I hear a verse of John Sebastian's "Welcome Back" from the "Welcome Back Kotter, Show."

Welcome Back, your dreams were your ticket out. Welcome Back to that same old place that you laughed about...I knew you would remember it. Get some sports cards, if not cards then comics. Go and get something that is going to take you to a time and place where only you and your pals know existed and when you find that item, hold on tightly and don't ever let go...

Vintage Dolls - Things to Consider When Starting Your Collection

Many people enjoy collecting vintage dolls for different reasons, not least of which 1982 Fleer baseball cards that it reminds them of the ones they had as children. It also gives you insight into history, just as stamp collecting does, but dolls have a much longer history than stamps.

Collectors can chose from a variety of vintage and modern dolls when building their collections. The older vintage dolls were made with porcelain before the bisque variety was created. Later, they were made with composite materials, vinyl, celluloid, china and plastic.

There are so many vintage dolls available in the market these days, how do you know which is the better investment? First, you should know that scarcity sometimes may put one doll ahead of another in the collectible bracket. Popularity is another factor which can increase 1960's toys value. Barbie is a classic example as these dolls are always very popular with collectors with the more scarce ones being the most valuable.

Some enthusiasts specialize in certain styles of craftsmanship in doll production while other collectors are more interested in their clothing or particular materials of construction. For example, one who collects porcelain examples will be after the vintage models produced during the 19th century. On the other hand, a folk art collector will be very interested in the regional home-made types.

The main characteristic as far as most are concerned is the overall appearance of the doll. The price that it will bring relies heavily on this factor. An example of this would be that a nice looking antique Barbie would bring in a much higher price than a not-so-good-looking one. Another factor that affects its value is whether or not it is being sold with its original clothing or packaging. One that comes with all of its original clothing and packaging is always worth so much more than one without these items.

Of course, more than anything else, you should focus collecting the ones which have some personal appeal to you. Your individuality and interests should be seen in your collection, not those of other people. Initially, try to collect a few different examples of a particular line such as Liddle Kiddles, Betty Boop, or G.I. Joe. If you aim to assemble too broad a variety early on, you may become quickly frustrated as you will end up accumulating the ones that really don't fit well into your collection. But even if you do end up with some you no longer want, never fear. It's easy to now sell these to a fellow collector who would be thrilled to acquire them using one of the online auction or classified ads websites. You can then reinvest that money into the thrill of seeking out more suitable pieces.
