Not All E-Learning is Created Equal

The benefits injury lawyers 4 you having company online training available is undeniable, but the fact of the matter is that not all online training is created equal. While e-learning is gaining momentum among corporate trainers the message is not always being received. When a company decides to offer online training van insurance quote its employees it's no doubt a big commitment. In many cases this decision to take training online and out of the classroom was made to control costs, but the idea of engaging the learner is being lost. Online training, when properly designed, can be an effective tool for corporate learning but keep these points in mind before launching your next online class.

The whole idea behind teaching anybody anything is that the learner retains the material being presented. Sure, reading the info and passing the test is nice but what good does it really do if after the test is taken they remember nothing about what they learned. This can be a real problem especially when teaching things that are issues of government regulation and compliance. In order for the learner to truly retain the material with which they are presented they must be engaged, and engaging an e-learner is dependent upon four things:

1) Relevancy of the content

If you are putting a class online that has no real impact of the job of the person taking the class then you have just dramatically decreased the amount of material they are going to retain. On the other hand if the course is as prerequisite for employment or is mandatory government compliance then the course becomes 100 times more relevant and therefore engages the learner.

2) Interactivity

Interactivity plays a huge role in whether or not the learner is going to engage in the material. If you decide to drop a company manual into some e-learning software that the user has to simply click through and read then there is no chance the learner is going to connect with the material. The key here is discovery learning by creating simulations and games that present the material in an interactive way.

3) Media Stimulus

As far as media stimulus is concerned, it's like I said before you can simply drop a text book into some software and call it a course, but if you want to engage the learner you must incorporate media. Mix in some images with accompanying audio, better yet, include animation or video of real life situations that the learner can relate to. Bottom line is the electronic world we live in provide people with sufficient media stimulus and your e-learning initiatives must do the same in order to successfully engage the learner.

4) Ease of use

Now I realize that simply clicking from page to page is easy to use, but that contradicts what we are trying to accomplish. What you want to do is create well thought out navigation that leads the learner through the discovery process. Make the class intuitive, have consequences and rewards associated with the choices the learner makes.

As previously mentioned, online learning is a big investment, so why not maximize your companies return by engaging the learner. E-learning, when properly developed can have huge returns on investment because there is a transfer on knowledge from the course to on the job skills.
